MVC MEN'S WRESTLING FINISHES NO. 8 AT NATIONAL DUAL TOURNAMENT
Marshall, Mo. (January 13, 2013)- The No. 10 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team finished in eighth place at the National Duals Tournament in Springfield, Ill over the weekend. The Vikings competed against some of the other top wrestling programs in the NAIA at the event. In day one of the event, the Vikings lost to No. 5 Campbellsville (Ky.) 27-15 in the first round. In the consolation first round the Vikings beat No. 11 Cumberlands (Ky.) by a 32-9 team score. In the second round of the consolation bracket the Vikings edged out No. 6 Oklahoma City (Okla.) 22-18.
In the opening action of day two the Vikings took on No. 8 Lindsey Wilson College in the consolation semifinals. The Vikings were defeated 26-15 in team points. At 125 pounds No. 14 Freshman Ryan Stearns (Williston, Vt.) defeated Felix Casa del Valle by an 11-6 decision. At 133 pounds No. 10 Sophomore Logan Welch (Lexington, Mo.) defeated Leo Hardy in a third period pin. Sophomore Willie Essex (St. Louis, Mo.) was defeated by No. 3 Wismit Moinuis in the 141 pound match by a 6-2 score. The Vikings picked up another win at 149 pounds as No. 6 Freshman Jake Ekster (Houston, Texas) defeated Zach McCormick in an 11-5 decision. Freshman Dylan King (Hamilton, Mo.) was defeated by Joe Cozart at 157 pounds by a 10-2 decision. The Vikings were defeated in the 165 pounds weight class as No. 12 Senior Gian Traverso (St. Helena, Calif.) was defeated by No. 11 James Haywood In a 13-1 decision. At 174 pounds Senior Jamaal Bufford (Lake Jackson, Texas) was beaten by No. 15 Cadyn McKeeth in an 8-2 decision. Freshman Brett Bader (Farmington, Mo.) picked up a victory at 184 pounds over Thomas Bruckman with 10-3 decision. At 197 pounds No. 5 Junior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.) was disqualified in day one, leaving the weight class open for MVC and giving No. 10 Jacob Bradford a forfeit victory. No. 6 Junior Dan Mueller (Collinsville, Ill.) capped off the dual at 285 pounds by being pinned by No. 7 Theodore Furnish in the third round.
The loss in the consolation semifinals put the Vikings in the seventh place dual going up against No. 17 Midland (Neb.). The Vikings were beaten by Midland 21-19 in team points. At 125 pounds Stearns was defeated by Aspen Kmiec in a third round pin. In the 133 pound dual Welch was defeated by Jacob Luning-Hoshino in a 15-9 decision. The Vikings picked up their first victory at 141 pounds as Essex won a 6-3 decision over No. 3 Jared Wilmert. At 149 pounds Ekster was able to pick up a first round pin of Nick Schroeder. King made it three in a row for the Vikings by winning his 157 pound dual over No. 10 Sterling Terry in a close 2-1 decision. Traverso kept the streak going as he picked up a 13-5 decision victory over Shawn Keating at 165 pounds. Midland picked up a victory in the 174 pound weight class as Bufford was defeated by No. 16 Connor Hovey 11-6. Bader was knocked off in the 184 pound weight class in a 14-8 decision against Jahsua Marsh. The 197 pound weight class was left open by MVC giving Dustin Brunner a forfeit victory. In the 285 pound weight class, Mueller tried to give MVC the victory, but came away with only three points as he defeated Lonnie Brown in a 6-4 decision.
The Vikings finished in eighth place as a team. The team champion was Grand View. Grand View will visit Missouri Valley College for a dual against the Vikings Jan. 30.
The Vikings will next be in action hosting the Missouri Valley College Invitational Saturday Jan. 19 at the Burns Athletic Complex.
