MVC WOMEN'S WRESTLERS TAKE FOURTH AT NATIONAL DUAL TOURNAMENT
Marshall, Mo. (January 13, 2013)- The No. 7 Missouri Valley College women's wrestling team finished in fourth place at the NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals in Springfield, Ill. this weekend. On the first day of competition the Lady Vikings defeated Lindenwood University 26-17 in team points.
The Lady Vikings took on the top seed at the event No. 2 Oklahoma City University in the championship semifinals. The Lady Vikings fell to OCU by a 33-7 score. At 101 pounds Freshman Dalina Vuong (Arlington, Texas) was defeated by Emily Webster in a first round pin. In the 109 pound match Freshman Samantha Higa (Aiea, Hawaii) was defeated by Kristi Garr in a second period decision. At 116 pounds Junior Samantha Lovelace (South Prairie, Wash.) was pinned in the first round by Joey Miller. At 123 pounds Sophomore Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif.) picked up the first Lady Viking victory by outlasting Brieana Delgado in a third period decision. At 130 pounds Junior Brittney Faust (Saxonburg, Mo.) was pinned in the third round by Aubrey Morehouse. At 136 pounds Junior Randi Beltz (Chesterfield, Mo.) came away with a second period victory over Kayla Aggio, but OCU was able to pick up points at 143 pounds as Stephanie Geltmacher defeated Junior Frances Efiong (Arlington, Texas) in a second period decision. At 155 pounds OCU won again as Brittany Roberts defeated Senior Jordan Hagerman (Nevada, Mo.) in a second period decision, with Demi Staub winning for OCU in the 170 pound weight class over Junior Brittany Jones (Grapevine, Texas) by second period decision. In the 191 pound weight class MVC's Senior Tamara Hartfield (Killeen, Texas) was degfeated by Heather O'Connor in a first period pin.
The Lady Vikings then took on No. 1 King College in the third place dual, but the Lady Vikings came up short in the 28-9 defeat. In the 101 pound weight class Vuong was defeated by Emily Webster in a second period decision. At 109 pounds Freshman Christina Bautista (Collieville, Texas) was defeated by Emily Martin in a second period pin. At 116 pounds Lovelace was defeated by Samantha Klingel in a second period decision. The Lady Vikings picked up their first victory at 123 pounds as Winchester defeated Kayla Brendlinger in a third period decision. Faust got the second MVC victory at 130 pounds thanks to a second period decision over Kayla Bartosch. At 136 pounds Beltz was defeated Alli Ragan in a second period decision. Efiong was defeated in the 143 pound weight class by Amanda Hendy in a second period decision. At 155 pounds Hagerman was defeated by Julia Salata in a second period decision. In the 170 pound match Jones was defeatd by Jackie Williams in a second period decision. Hartfield was defeated in the 191 pound weight class Lorrie Ramos in a second period decision.
The Lady Vikings finished in fourth place at the event, with Simon Fraser taking home the team championship
The Lady Vikings will next be in action at the WCWA Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. Jan. 25-26.
