William Jewell Men's Basketball

The William Jewell Cardinals defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons 79-71 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on Saturday in Liberty, Mo.   With the victory the Cardinals were able to snap UMSL's three game winning streak and snapped their own two game losing streak.

The Cardinals took over the lead at the 11:05 mark of the first half and held the lead for the rest of the game.  Jewell's Craig Mattson nailed a three at the buzzer to put the Cardinals up 37-33 heading into halftime.

The Cardinals looked like they were pulling away when up by six with 10:54 to go in the second half, went on an 8-0 run thanks to 7 points from sophomore Dillon Deck.  Jewell then increased their lead to 15 with 7:05 to play only to the Tritons make one more strong push toward the end.

The Tritons were able to cut the lead to two with 2:03 to go when Justin Jones converted a three-point play.   Jewell was able to hold strong from the free throw line to put the game away.  The Cards shot 24-29 from the charity strike in the second half.  Another key to the Cardinal success was winning the turnover battle.  The Tritons had 15 turnovers, 12 of which were Cardinal steals, while Jewell had 8.

Mattson led three Cardinal players in double figures with 18 points including a perfect 8-8 from the foul line.  Mattson also grabbed a game high 13 rebounds.  Deck finished with 15 while John Taylor chipped in 11.

Michael Weber led the Tritons with 19 points as they fall to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in GLVC play.

The Cardinals (7-7, 3-3 GLVC) will return to action on Monday as they host Rockhurst University for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
