The William Jewell Cardinals defeated the Maryville Saints 72-64 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on Thursday evening at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half as Maryville shot 21 percent and Jewell hit 31 percent. Senior Katlyn Wood was three of four from three-point land and had 11 first half points. Both teams struggled in the last part of the first half going scoreless for nearly two and half minutes. Jewell led 32-24 going into halftime.
The Cards (9-4, 3-2 GLVC) were able to build a 12 point lead in the first ten minutes of the second half only to see Maryville go on a run to cut the lead to one. Jewell was able to keep the lead answering each Maryville run.
Wood led the way for Jewell scoring 22 points and finished five for seven from three-point land. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. Cassy Nicolay scored 17 points and Aerial Smith contributed 12 points.
Kansas City native Abby Duethman scored a game high 27 points for Maryville who falls to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in GLVC play.
The Cardinals will host University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
