William Jewell Women's Basketball

The William Jewell Cardinals fell 46-41 to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in a Great Lakes Valley Conference clash on Saturday in Liberty, Mo. 

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half as UMSL hit on 33 percent of their shots and Jewell hit 25 percent of their shots.  The Cards held the Tritons scoreless for the first three minutes before UMSL rattled off a 7-0 run to go up 7-2.

Both teams traded leads back and forth in the first half and the Cards and led 23-21 at the half. 

The two teams again struggled from the field in the second half and the game came down to the final three minutes.  With the Cards trailing by two 39-37, junior Cassy Nicolay converted a three-point play to put Jewell up by one with 2:56 to play. 

The Tritons would regain the lead as Devonna Smith's rebound and follow would put UMSL up 41-40.  The Tritons pushed the lead to 42-40 when Kelly McGovern converted one of two from the charity strike. 

Chelsea Meeks hit one of two free throws on Jewell's next possession and the Tritons would then close out the contest hitting their next four free-throw attempts.

Nicolay was the only Cardinal in double figures with 10 as Jewell shot 22.6 percent from the field. 

Hazaria Washington led the Tritons in scoring with 12 as they move to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the GLVC. 

The Cardinals (9-5, 3-3 GLVC) will return to action on Monday as they host Rockhurst University for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
