VIKINGS HOST WRESTLING OPEN TOURNAMENT SUNDAY
Marshall, Mo. (February 3, 2013)- The No. 10 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team welcomed teams from all over the Midwest for its annual MVC Open Sunday at the Burns Athletic Complex. The Vikings had 16 wrestlers place including four taking first place.
At 125 pounds Freshman No. 17 Ryan Stearns (Williston, Vt.) received a first round bye, won his quarterfinal match in double over-time, then he won in the semifinal round by way of major decision putting him in the championship match. In the final match Stearns defeated Adam Ludwin of Fort Hays State University by a tie breaker to take the championship match. Freshman Kevin Bonilla (Cypress, Texas) received a bye in round one, won by major decision in the quarterfinal match, was defeated in the semifinal by major decision, and won by pin in semifinal consolation round by pin. In the third place match Bonilla defeated Douglas Allembaugh of University of Central Missouri. Freshman Matthew Flores (Richardson, Texas) received a first round bye, was defeated in the quarterfinal match by major decision, received a bye in consolation round two, and was eliminated in the third consolation round.
At 133 pounds Sophomore Logan Welch (Lexington, Mo.) received a bye in round one, was defeated in the quarterfinal match by decision, won in overtime in consolation round two, won by decision in round three by decision, and won by pin in the consolation semifinal in the third period. Welch defeated teammate Dakota Napoli by decision to take third place. Freshman Justin Corradino (Chester, Ny.) won by pin in round one in the second period, won by pin in the quarterfinal match in the first period, lost by decision in the semifinal match, and was defeated in the consolation semifinal by decision. In the fifth place match Corradin pinned Travis Rodenbaugh of Newman University in the first period to take the match. Freshman Dakota Napoli (Farmington, Mo.) received a first round bye, was defeated in the quarterfinal match by decision, won consolation round two by decision, won round three by pin in the second period, and won the consolation semifinal by decision. Napoli was defeated in the third place match by teammate Logan Welch to take fourth place. Freshman Darren Trujillo (Albuquerque, Nm.) was defeated by a 4-0 decision in round one, and was eliminated in round one of consolation.
At 141 pounds Freshman Todd Brackett (Farmington, Mo.) won by pin in the first period of round one, won by tech fall in the quarterfinal match, and won the semifinal match by pin in the second round to advance to the championship match. In the championship match Brackett defeated Jesse Conoway of Lindenwood University to take first place. Sophomore Willie Essex (St. Louis, Mo.) won by pin in round one, won his quarterfinal match by major decision, was defeated in the semifinal round by decision, and won in the consolation semifinal by decision. In the third place match Essex was pinned in the third period by James Carter of Newman University. Junior Dylan Ykimoff (Jackson, Mich.) was defeated by major decision in round one, received a consolation round one bye, and was eliminated in round two by decision.
At 149 pounds Sophomore Jared Sterling (Tacoma, Wash.) received a first round bye, was defeated in the quarterfinal by decision, he won in consolation round two by decision, won by pin in period one in round three, and won in consolation semifinals to advance to the third place match. Sterling defeated Cole Price of Baker University to take third place. Freshman Dalton Mudgett (Chewelah, Wash.) was defeated in round one bye decision, received a first round bye in consolation round one, and was eliminated in round two by decision.
At 157 pounds Freshman No. 11 Dylan King (Hamilton, Mo.) won round one by pin in period one, won the quarterfinal match by pin in round three, and won by decision in the semifinal round to advance to the championship match. King was defeated by Greg Hegarty of Maryville University in the championship match to take second place. Sophomore Nico Martinez (Ontario, Ore.) was pinned in period three of round one, received a consolation round one bye, and was eliminated in round two.
At 165 pounds Senior No. 5 Gian Traverso (St. Helena, Calif.) won by decision in round one, won by tech fall in the quarterfinal match, and won by decision in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. In the championship match Traverso defeated by decision over Christian Loges of Maryville University to take first place. Freshman Antwyone Brown (Chicago, Ill.) was pinned in round one, received a consolation round one bye, won by decision in round two, and was eliminated in round three.
At 174 pounds Freshman Clark Poston (Essex Junction, Vt.) was defeated in his first round match, and received a bye in his first consolation match before being eliminated in the second consolation round. Also, Freshman Taylor Smith (Platte City, Mo.) was defeated in his first round match, and received a bye in the consolation first round. In the second consolation round Smith picked up a win by decision, but was eliminated in consolation round three. Freshman Dakota Concepcion (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) received a first round bye, but was defeated in the quarterfinals. In the consolation brackets Concepcion received a second round bye, then a victory by decision in round three, but was defeated in the consolation semifinals setting a match for fifth place. Concepcion was defeated by Nathan Shipley of Fort Hays State University in a first period pin to finish in sixth place.
At 184 pounds Freshman Nick Stephenson (Weiser, Idaho) received a first round bye, was defeated in the quarterfinals in a third round pin, and was eliminated in his first consolation round match by a decision. Sophomore Taylor Di Trolio (Rogersville, Mo.) received a first round bye, then picked up a quarterfinal victory by a decision. Di Tolio was defeated by a third period pin in the semifinals, and was defeated in the consolation semifinals by a decision to wrestle for fifth place. In the fifth place match Di Trolio was pinned in the first round by Jordan Bridgers of the University of Texas to finish in sixth place. No. 13 Freshman Brett Bader (Farmington, Mo.) started the Open with a loss in the first round by a decision, then a first round bye in the consolation bracket. Bader then won his first consolation match by a decision, and won again in the consolation third round by a third round pin. Bader advanced to the third place match with a decision victory in the consolation semifinals. Bader was defeated by Tyler Hasenbank of Newman University in a 5-3 decision to take fourth place. Freshman Wade Aylett (Irrigon, Ore.) received a first round bye, and was defeated in the quarterfinals by third period pin. Aylett received another bye in the consolation bracket, but was defeated in a third period pin in consolation round three.
At 197 pounds Freshman Will Owens (Columbia, Mo.) advanced to the semifinals with a first round bye and a quarterfinal victory by second round pin. Owens lost in the semifinals in a third round pin, but bounced back and advanced to the third place match with a first round pin in the consolation semifinals. Owens was defeated by Todd Brier to finish in fourth place losing in a second period pin. No. 5 Junior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.) made his way through the bracket with a first round first period pin, a quarterfinal win by injury default, and a semifinal victory by major decision to wrestler for first place. No. 10Junior Carl Lawrence (Sullivan, Mo.) also went through the bracket with a first round first period pin, a semifinal victory by decision and a semifinal third round pin to meet Manu in the first place match. Manu defeated Lawrence in the championship match in a 3-2 decision.
At 285 pounds Freshman Aaron Snep (North Manchester, Ind.) received a first round by, but was defeated by a major decision in round two. In the consolation bracket Snep received a bye and was eliminated in the third round in a first period pin. Freshman Justin Smith (Corral Springs, Fla.) picked up a first round victory by a decision, but was defeated in round two by a decision. In the consolation bracket Smith received a bye, but was eliminated in the third round by a decision.
