The William Jewell College men's basketball team was stunned by Quincy University 56-55, Thursday evening in Liberty, Mo. Jewell falls to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in the GLVC, while Quincy improves to 9-11 overall, 4-8 GLVC.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half of play. The Cards only shot 29.6 percent from the field while the Hawks only shot 29.2 percent. At the 9 minute mark of the first half the Cardinals only led 9-6 and only led 17-16 at halftime.
Jewell opened up a 29-27 lead midway through the second half only to see the Hawks go on an 8-0 run to lead 35-29.
Quincy held on to the lead until the Cardinals were able to tie the game at 55 with 19 seconds left to play.
Jewell's John Taylor was called for a foul with four seconds to go and Quincy's Tyler Thompson hit one of two free throws to provide the Hawks with the one point winning margin.
Jewell was led individually by Craig Mattson with 14 points and Taylor and Dillon Deck with 13 points each.
Quincy was led by Chris Babbitt who scored a game high 27 points.
The Cardinals return home Saturday, February 9 as they play host to University of Illinois-Springfield with a tip-off time of 3:00 p.m.
