The William Jewell College softball team opened up its 2013 campaign by splitting a road doubleheader at Northeastern State University, winning 11-2 in the opener against Bacone, and falling 4-3 to host Northeastern State in the finale.
Jewell opened the season against Bacone, by scattering ten hits over five innings in the 11-2 victory. The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Brittany Madsen.
After the Cards plated home another run in the bottom of the third, the Cardinal offense exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Madsen hit a two-run double to finish the game with 5 RBI's.
Kelsey Teneycke was 2-3 with four RBI's, Lexy Rozmus went 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

In game two, the Cardinals took on Northeastern State and it was the host Riverhawks that pulled ahead early, scoring two in the first, then adding two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals then made it interesting by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Annali
Dolman provided the spark with a three-run homerun but it was not enough as Northeastern closed out the game in the top of the seventh.
Faith Song took the loss, giving up four earned runs on seven hits through 2.2 innings of work.
The Cardinals (1-1) will return to action against the same two teams tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.
