The Jewell men's basketball team had a fast start and a fast close to their game at Rockhurst University on Thursday, winning 64-59 to end the regular season at 13-13, 9-9 in GLVC play.
The Cardinals now await the conference Championship Tournament brackets to see where they will play on Sunday as either the 10th or 11th seed.
Jewell got out to a 13-0 start against the Hawks (4-21, 3-15) behind 11 straight points by Dillon Deck. Rockhurst rallied, though, to trail by just two at the half at 26-24.
The first 13 minutes of the second half was tightly contested, but the game turned with around seven minutes left when Jewell changed defenses and changed the tempo of the game. The Cardinals, who were outshot in the game 41% to 40%, were able to build the lead back to 13 points with two minutes left before Rockhurst closed the gap again with several three pointers.
Jewell put the game away when Jordan Lewis hit a key three-pointer, Ricky Tisdale had a three-point play, and the Cardinals hit free throws down the stretch.
Deck ended the game with 20 points to lead Jewell, while John Taylor had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Devonte Bell had six points and five assists, and Craig Mattson scored three points, seven rebounds, two steals, and five assists.
