VIKING BASEBALL TEAM DROPS TWO CLOSE GAMES TO BETHANY COLLEGE
Marshall, Mo. (March 8, 2013)- After nearly three weeks between games due to the weather the Missouri Valley College baseball team hit the road Friday afternoon for a doubleheader with Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. The Vikings lost the first game in extra-innings 1-0, and lost a close game two by a 2-1 score.
It was a pitchers dual between MVC's Senior Brandon Cooper (Alameda, Calif.) and Bethany's Jordan Geiger. Both pitchers kept the other team from getting anything positive going at the plate. The Vikings threatened in the top of the third inning with back-to-back singles with one out by Freshman Shortstop Devin Burnworth (Kansas City, Mo.) and Junior Second Baseman Tim Roddy (Yakima, Wash.) put runners at first and second base. The runners were left stranded following a pop-out to the pitcher and a ground out to the shortstop. The Vikings would not have another base runner reach second. Bethany was able to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning after the leadoff batter reached on a single, was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt, and was brought home thanks to a single to center field. Cooper picked up the loss despite going 7.1 innings, giving up six hits, one walk, and one earned run, while striking out six. From the plate, Burnworth went 1 for 2 with one walk, while Roddy, Freshman Right Fielder Anthony Patchin (Lake St. Louis, Mo.), and Freshman Left Fielder Jacob Stafford (Richmond, Mo.) accounted for the other three Viking base hits.
Game two was just as close, but the Vikings found themselves down by a run early, as Bethany College was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. The Vikings threatened in the fifth inning as Burnworth walked with two outs and Sophmore Third Baseman Ruben Paniagua (Blue Springs, Mo.) hit a single. The two were able to advance to third and second base respectively on the throw, but both were left stranded. Bethany added an insurance run in the fifth inning, but the Vikings looked to start a rally in the top of the sixth. With one out Junior First Baseman Josh Hartin (Washburn, Mo.) was able to hit a double, which was followed up with a single by Sophomore Catcher Anthony Corona (Lee's Summit, Mo.). A sacrifice fly by Freshman Designated Hitter Greg Gilreath (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) allowed Hartin to score, putting MVC down by just a run. In the top of the seventh, the Vikings had runners at first and second but the two were left stranded, giving Bethany the 2-1 win. Senior Pitcher Jordan Amlong (Effingham, Mo.) went six innings giving up the two runs on five hits while striking out four to pick up the loss. Hartin, Corona and Burnworth all finished with two hits apiece.
The Vikings drop to 0-4 on the season while Bethany College improves to 8-10.
Next up for the Vikings is a road trip to Minneapolis, Minn., with games at the Metrodome. The Vikings play Waldorf College Monday March 11 at 11:45 a.m. and Mayville State University Tuesday March 12 at 11:30 a.m.
