The William Jewell College baseball team split a doubleheader with University of Sioux Falls on Sunday afternoon at a warm and sunny Cameron University Stadium in Lawton, Okla. Sioux Falls won the first game 5-4, before Jewell came back to take the second game in 9-8. The Cardinals move to 3-3 on the season while Sioux Falls sees its record move to 3-5 overall.
In the first game, Sioux Falls jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and two more in the third.
Jewell got on the board with a single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth respectively.
Jewell made things interesting by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cougars were able to get
Drew Mitrisin to ground out to shortstop with the tying run on base to end the game.
Chris Mancha got the start on the mound for the Cardinals. He went one inning and allowed three runs on five hits. Ron Johnson went 1.2 innings. He allowed three hits and two runs. Billy Kirkpatrick went 4.1 innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out 5.
Eric Brothers picked up the win for Sioux Falls pitching 4.2 innings and allowed two runs, on five hits. He struck out one and walked four. He improves to 1-0 on the season.
In the second game, Sioux Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jewell answered with a single run in the bottom of the first then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third. Bryan Rezin hit a three-run double to key the scoring attack in the inning for Jewell.
Sioux Falls would answer back with three runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the sixth. Jewell would score a single run in the bottom of the fifth before facing their last at bat down 8-7.
In the bottom of the seventh Zach Tyson hit a one out double and after a Jesse Gray pinch ran for Tyson, shortstop Coleman Waheed delivered a game tying single and advanced to second base on the throw home. Rezin then delivered the walk-off single to score Waheed and give Jewell the nightcap victory.
Rezin finished the game going 3-5 with five RBI's while Coleman Waheed went 2-2 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Cody Downing got the start for the Cardinals giving up eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits while striking out six. Preston Felgate (1-0) came in to earn the victory pitching 1.1 innings giving up one hit and striking out two.
Henry Ojeda got the start on the mound for Sioux Falls. He went 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. Matt Thomas replaced Ojeda and went 0.2 innings and allowed one hit and one walk. Steve Schroer (1-1) relieved Thomas and took the loss allowing two runs on three hits.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 9 when they travel to Jefferson City, Mo., for a doubleheader against Lincoln University.
