The William Jewell College men's tennis team fell, 7-2, to Rockhurst University today in its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opener at Clayview Country Club in Kansas City, Mo.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC. With the win, Rockhurst improves to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC.
Jewell opened the match with Shane Giannetti and Bryan Thomas earning an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Bronson
Brassel and Max Cooper lost a tough 9-8 battle at No. 2 and Jimmy Hunter and Michael Wiskirchen also lost a tough 9-8 decision at No. 3 doubles.
Rockhurst was able to win five of the six singles matches with Jewell's only singles win coming from Max Cooper at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1.
The Cardinals return to Clayview Country Club at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday for a GLVC match with Drury University.
The William Jewell College women's tennis team fell to Rockhurst University 7-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Jewell (9-3, 0-1 GLVC) lost 3-0 in doubles play against the Hawks. Junior Kristen Stivers and sophomore Katy Lehenbauer fell 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Loree and Conner Hazelrigg suffered their first defeat of the season at No. 2 doubles dropping an 8-5 decision. Hana Lindbloom and Jaimie Baker also dropped an 8-5 contest at No. 3 doubles.
Rockhurst (8-5, 1-0 GLVC) defeated the Cardinals 4-1 in singles play. Jewell's only win in singles play came at the No. 1 spot as Stivers won 6-2, 7-5. Senior Carli Bisesi was leading 7-6, 3-0 when the match had to be called due to time constraints.
Jewell will play host to Drury University on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Clayview Country Club.
