The Cards surrendered just four games in doubles play to take an early 3-0 advantage. Kristen Stivers and Katy Lehenbauer prevailed 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Loree and Conner Hazelrigg (No. 2 doubles) won their match 8-2. Savannah Drew and Jaimie Baker (No. 3 doubles) blanked their opponents by a score of 8-0.
Jewell proved just as strong in singles play as the bottom three slots dominated in shutout victories. Lehenbauer won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, followed by 6-0, 6-0 wins by Loree Hazelrigg and Carli Bisesi at the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.
The Cardinals will close out GLVC play tomorrow as they host Quincy University at 9:00 a.m. at Clayview Country Club.
The William Jewell College men's tennis team beat University of Illinois-Springfield 8-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday. The Cards have now won three of their last four matches.
Jewell won all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Jewell's No. 1 doubles team of juniors Shane Giannetti and Bryan Thomas earned a hard fought 8-6 win. Senior Bronson Brassel and junior Max Cooper won 8-4 and junior Michael Wiskirchen and sophomore Jimmy Hunter breezed by at No. 3 doubles 8-2.
In singles play, Giannetti got a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. Bryan Thomas lost a three set heartbreaker at No. 2 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 which proved to be The Prairie Stars' only point of the dual. Brassel, Michael Rawat, Hunter and Cooper all won in straight sets.
