The William Jewell College baseball team (6-9 overall, 2-4 GLVC) fell to McKendree on Friday afternoon in the first two games of a four game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Cardinals lost game one 6-5 and game two 7-4.
In game one, The Bearcats struck first with a run in the first inning and two in the third to post a 3-1 lead.
Jewell then exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth. Vance Gorman hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and the Cards were able to manufacture three more runs in the inning in to take a 5-3 lead. McKendree scored one in the bottom of the fourth but the Cards would lead 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
After a lead-off infield single Jeff Tolliver delivered a run scoring double to tie the game. A.J. wise would pinch run for Tollivar and would score on a throwing error on the next at bat to give the Bearcats the win.
Drew Mitrisin went 8 innings giving up seven hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out seven. Preston Felgate, 1-2, suffered the loss.
Gorman led the way offensively going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
In game two, the Bearcats took control by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third. The Cards would score two in the top of the fourth while McKendree answered back with single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Cards would add two more in the top of the ninth but it would not be enough.
Jordan Rice led the way in the second game with three hits and two RBI's.
Cody Downing, 1-2 on the year, suffered the loss tossing six innings giving up eight hits, seven runs (six earned) while striking out six.
The Cardinals will conclude their four game series with McKendree tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
