VIKING MEN'S SOCCER TEAM EARNS HOME VICTORY SATURDAY
Marshall, Mo. (August 31, 2013)- The No. 18 Missouri Valley College men's soccer team opened up the home portion of its schedule Saturday evening by welcoming in Oklahoma Baptist University to Gregg-Mitchell Field. Two second half goals and smothering defense helped to give MVC a 2-0 victory.
The Vikings had plenty of opportunities on goal in the first half, getting off 11 shots, but only three of them were on goal. Things opened up for MVC in the second half less than three minutes after the restart as Freshman Midfielder Gabriel Nori Rosendo (Santa Cruz, Brazil) scored his first goal as a Viking. Assisting on the goal were Senior Forward Alberto Linan Gomez (Seville, Spain) and Freshman Midfielder Aleix Alvarez Dominguez (Barcelona, Spain).
The second goal came late in the game, with one minute left in regulation, when Junior Forward Melquiades Mora (Tenerife, Spain) padded the Viking lead after scoring on a rebound off a deflection from the Oklahoma Baptist keeper.
The Vikings had a total of 29 shots on the game, 11 of which were on goal. Senior Forward Nicholas Alexander finished with eight shots, four of which were on goal in the game. Senior Goalkeeper Josh Wells (Kent, England) recorded his second shutout of the season.
The win improves MVC to 2-0 on the season while Oklahoma Baptist drops to 0-1.
Up next for the Vikings is a matchup with Grand View University Sept. 7 in Des Moines, Iowa. Grand View is currently in the "others receiving votes" category in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll.
