The Lee's Summit West Titans were crowned champions of the Nelson Division as they defeated Blue Springs South 66-57 at the American Family Insurance Holiday Classic at William Jewell College.
The Titans dominated the first five minutes of play in the first quarter jumping out to a 14-0 lead. The Jaguars did not score their first points until 3:19 until Kevin Puryear hit one of two free throws. Carl Martin then drained a three-point shot that started an 11-0 run for Blue Springs South before the Titans ended the quarter on 4-0 run to lead 18-11.
The second quarter continued the theme of runs as the Titans began the quarter on a 6-0 run followed by a Blue Springs South 7-0 run. The action went back and forth and Monte Harrison closed out the half with a long three-point shot at the buzzer to give the Titans a 31-21 lead at the half.
Lee's Summit had an answer and more for each Blue Springs run in the third. The Jaguars missed a golden opportunity when down by 11 for momentum as Lee's Summit West's Ryan William was assessed a technical foul after a made basket. The Jaguars missed three straight free throws and were unable to convert on their possession. The Titans ended the third quarter up 51-37.
The Titans were then able to hold on in the fourth quarter for the win thanks in large part to a 44-21 advantage in rebounds for the game.
Kydall Powell led the Titans with 18 points while Monte Harrison chipped in 17. Trevor Gregory scored 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.
The Jaguars were led in scoring by Carl Martin and Justin Pitts who each scored 14.
