VIKINGS TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS TRAVEL TO ILLINOIS COLLEGE
Marshall, Mo. (February 2, 2013)- The Missouri Valley College track and field teams traveled to the Illinois College Meet Saturday, coming away with a fifth place finish for the men's team and a sixth place finish on the women's side.
Scoring points for the men's team included four Vikings in the men's long jump, led by event winner Junior Tyler Davis (St. Louis, Mo.). Davis jumped 21-feet 11.5-inches to win by over six inches. Coming in fourth place was Junior Aursland Seymor (Nassau, Bahamas) by less than eight inches from Davis. In fifth place was Junior Dwayne Williams (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and in sixth was Byron Evans with a jump of 21-feet.
Also for the men's team Senior Jon Leonard (Higginsville, Mo.) took fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet 9.75-inches. The men's 4x200 meter relay team finished in second place with a time of 1:35.22, missing out on first place by less than one second. Two Vikings place in the 800 meter run as Freshman Ignacio Franco (Cadiz, Spain) took second place with a time of 1:59.20, missing first by less than 1.5 seconds, and Sophomore Xavier Ramon (Arlington, Texas) took third in a time of 2:02.55. The men's 4x400 meter relay team came in fifth place in a time of 3:32.40.
The Lady Vikings had two of its members place in the long jump as Freshman Brittney Brisco (San Diego, Calif.) took third with a jump of 16-feet 7.25-inches, and Sophomore Carnekia Burnett (St. Louis, Mo.) came in eighth place with a jump of 14-feet 5.25-inches. Three Lady Vikings placed in the triple jump with Sophomore Daniela Torres (Killeen, Texas) taking fourth with a jump of 30-feet 8.25-inches. Coming in sixth was Freshman Daneka Brown (St. Louis, Mo.) with a jump of 30-feet 7-inches, and Senior Trina Williams (St. Louis, Mo.)took eighth with a jump of 28-feet 7.50-inches. Sophomore Natalie Cotto-Garcia (Ft. Worth, Texas) took fourth in the 3000 meter race walk in a time of 19:15.47. In the 5000 meter run Junior Amanda Buhr (Jefferson City, Mo.) took sixth with a time of 19:35.64.
Also the 4x200 meter relay team took third place in a time of 1:55.51. Sophomore Tia Rider (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) took seventh place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:37.49. The Lady Vikings' 4x400 meter relay team finished in fifth place with a time of 4:33.80.
The men's team finished in fifth place with 52.5 team points. The men's champion was Central Methodist University with 121.5 points. The Lady Vikings came in sixth with 46 team points, and Central Methodist won the women's side with 121 points.
The indoor track and field teams will next be in action at the Iowa State Invitational in Ames, Iowa Feb. 7-9.
