The final act of the 2012-13 William Jewell men's basketball season played itself out in Owensboro, Ky., against Kentucky Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon. The No. 10 seed Cardinals fell to the host No. 7 seed Panthers 93-75 as the Cardinals were forced to wrap up their season in the first round of the Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Basketball Tournament.
The Cardinals end their campaign at 13-14 while Kentucky Wesleyan improves to 20-7 on the season and will play in the quarterfinals on Friday in Evansville, Ind.
The Cardinals came out the gate on fire and led 10-4. The Panthers would come back and grab the lead leading by as many as six before the Cardinals would come back to lead 41-39 at the half.
Jewell came out of halftime completely cold as the hosts ran out to a 16-1 lead over the first five minutes of the second half and never looked back.
Kentucky Wesleyan would lead by as much as 24 in the half as they moved into the tournament quarterfinals and the Cardinals closed out their year.
For the hosts, Kreig Oxley netted 20 points while Dazmond Starke added 12 points.
In the loss, sophomore Dillon Deck paced the Cardinals with 20 points while senior Craig Mattson and junior Devonte Bell each scored 14.
