Junior Chelsea Meeks scored a season-high 34 points to lead the William Jewell College women's basketball team to an 83-74 victory over Bellarmine University in the First Round of the Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Mabee Center in Liberty.
The seventh-seeded Cardinals improve to 18-9 on the season, while the tenth-seeded Knights end their season with a 19-11 mark.
Meeks had a dominating night, scoring 34 points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out four assists and a nabbing a game-best five steals.
Meeks helped spark a 15-0 run midway through the first half by draining a three-pointer. Bellarmine turned it over and Meek's sank another three. The Cards forced yet another turnover on the inbounds and Aerial Smith scored on a layup.
The Knights struggled in the first half going nearly five minutes without scoring a field goal. Bellarmine shot only 29.4 percent in the first half.
Despite only four Cardinals scoring in the first half Jewell shot 54.5 percent from the field and led 44-30 at halftime.
Jewell built a lead as big as 18 in the second half. The Knights were able to get as close as six points on a few occasions but Meeks and the Cardinals were able to answer each Bellarmine run.
The Cards also benefited by going 14-16 from the free throw line in the second half.
Cassy Nicolay scored 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, Jessie Wheeler came off the bench to score 15 and Smith added 10 points and four assists.
Bellarmine was led by Darion Hutchinson with 19 points and Rachel Greenwell added 13 points.
William Jewell will travel to Evansville, Ind., for a Quarterfinal Round contest Friday.
