MVC MEN'S WRESTLING FINISHES SIXTH AT THE NWCA NAIA NATIONAL DUALS

 

Marshall, Mo. (January 12, 2014)-  The No. 3 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team placed sixth at the NWCA NAIA National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa.  The Vikings opened the event Saturday with a first round victory over No. 19 Dickinson State (N.D.) by a 34-10 team score.  The Vikings followed that up in the second round against No. 7 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and lost by a 24-19 team score.  The second round defeat moved MVC into the consolation bracket against No. 17 Baker University where the Vikings won the dual 28-14.  In the consolation semifinals the Vikings defeated No. 2 Montana State University-Northern 27-21, but finished sixth after losing to No. 5 Campbellsville (Ky.) University 29-18.  MVC finished with a 3-2 record at the National Duals.

 

Against Montana State-Northern the Vikings won six of 10 duals to win 27-21:

125 pounds- No. 12 Junior Logan Welch (Lexington, Mo.) defeated Riley Miller in a 7-5 decision.

133 pounds- No. 15 Sophomore Todd Brackett (Farmington, Mo.) defeated Doug O'Hara by a 17-2 technical fall.

141 pounds- Freshman Daniel Rivera (Houston, Texas) lost to No. 4 Cameron Neiss in a first period pin.

149 pounds- No. 1 Sophomore Jake Ekster (Houston, Texas) defeated No. 9 Hunter Azure in a 15-5 technical fall.

157 pounds- Junior Jared Sterling (Tacoma, Wash.) lost to No. 3 Edward Cheff by a 10-8 decision.

165 pounds- No. 9 Junior Nico Martinez (Ontario, Ore.) lost to No. 2 Ethan Hinebauch in a first period pin.

174 pounds- No. 8 Junior Riley Boomer (Sheridan, Mich.) defeated No. 11 Jared Miller in a first period pin.

184 pounds- Sophomore Brett Bader (Farmington, Mo.) won as Montana State-Northern left the weight class open

197 pounds- No. 2 Senior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.)  lost to No. 4 Toby Cheff in a first period pin.

285 pounds- No. 3 Sophomore Gabi Musallam (San Diego, Calif.) defeated Jorrell Jones by an 11-9 decision

 

Against Campbellsville the Vikings lost 29-18:

125 pounds- No. 6 Sophomore Ryan Stearns (Williston, Vt.) lost to No. 4 Cody Steiner in a second period pin.

133 pounds- No. 15 Sophomore Todd Brackett (Farmington, Mo.) defeated Drew Ferguson in a 6-4 decision.

141 pounds- No. 15 Junior Brian Bitney (Puyallup, Wash.) lost to No. 2 Brandon Westerman in a first period pin.

149 pounds- No. 1 Sophomore Jake Ekster (Houston, Texas) defeated Colby Reinhart in a 5-2 decision.

157 pounds- Junior Jared Sterling (Tacoma, Wash.) lost to No. 4 Shawn McGhee in a 17-0 technical fall.

165 pounds- No. 9 Junior Nico Martinez (Ontario, Ore.) lost to No. 14 Treyvonta Rhodes in a second period pin.

174 pounds- No. 8 Junior Riley Boomer (Sheridan, Mich.) defeated Marvin Lawrence by a 9-6 decision.

184 pounds- Kyle Sweedman won as MVC left the weight class open

197 pounds- No. 2 Senior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.) defeated No. 9 Nate Knauf in a second period pin.

285 pounds- No. 8 Junior Daniel Mueller (Collinsville, Ill.) defeated Justin McDaniel by a 4-2 decision.

 

The Vikings will be in action Saturday hosting the MVC Open at the Burns Athletic Complex beginning at 9:00 a.m.
