MVC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOPS BETHEL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

 

Marshall, Mo. (August 29, 2013)- The Missouri Valley College women's soccer team welcomed in Bethel (Tenn.) University on a hot Thursday afternoon at Gregg-Mitchell Field.  The Vikings eventually prevailed with a goal in the second overtime period to win 1-0.

 

MVC dominated play for much of the game, outshooting Bethel by a 22-6 margin.  MVC also topped Bethel in shots on goal by a 15-2 margin, and in corner kicks by a 9-1 margin.

 

Sophomore Irene Sanchez (Barcelona, Spain) recorded her first shutout of the season to help in the victory.  Bethel was also forced to play with only 10 players for most of the second half and all of overtime after Melissia Madden was sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

 

The lone goal of the game came just one minute into the second overtime period when Freshman Midfielder Andrea Garcia (Toledo, Spain) scored from the top right corner of the box. 

 

The win improves MVC to 1-1-1 on the season while Bethel falls to 0-1.

 

Up next for the women's soccer team is a home match against McKendree (Ill.) University on Thursday Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
