MVC WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS OPENING GAMES OF INVITATIONAL

 

 

Marshall, Mo. (August 30, 2013)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball team began play Friday evening in the MVC Viking Invitational at the Burns Athletic Complex.  The Vikings defeated University of Saint Mary in the first match of the evening 25-16, 25-13, 25-11.  Against Southwestern College in match two MVC won in three games 25-11, 25-7, 25-16.

 

MVC dominated play for much of the match against Saint Mary in the 3-0 win.  The Vikings were led in kills by Freshman Outside Hitter Lauren Eldridge (Kansas City, Mo.) with 11.  Senior Libero Diane Dellasalla (Houston, Texas) finished with eight digs and Junior Libero Jessica Hobbs (Wamego, Kan.) added six digs.  Senior Setter Tarrah Sweet (Roswell, N.M.) led the team with 33 assists and added three blocks while Senior Middle Blocker Jada Hollinshead (Tunnel Hill, Ill.) finished with four blocks.

 

For the second straight match Friday evening the Vikings dominated much of the play, this time against Southwestern College in a 3-0 victory.  Leading the way for MVC was Junior Middle Blocker Taylor Trotter (Bartonville, Ill.) with ten kills, while Eldridge finished with nine kills.  Senior Libero Tayler Frederiksen (Lakin, Kan.) added six aces, with Dellasalla finished with ten digs.  Also, Sweet added 25 assists in the match.

 

MVC is now 2-0 on the season.

 

Other results from the Invitational Friday evening:

Avila University defeating Haskell Indian Nations University 25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22

Avila defeated Southwestern College 25-15, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19 

Haskell defeated University of Lindenwood-Belleville 25-17, 25-10, 21-25, 25-18

Saint Mary defeated Lindenwood-Belleville 25-11, 25-27, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10

 

Up next for the Vikings are two more matches Saturday afternoon at the Burns Athletic Complex.  MVC will play Haskell Indian Nations University at 12 p.m. and will wrap up the MVC Viking Invitational against Stephens College at 4:00 p.m.
