MVC WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SWEEP SATURDAY TRIANGULAR MATCHES
Marshall, Mo. (September 14, 2013)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball team hosted the Viking Triangular at the Burns Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. The Vikings played a Heart of America Athletic Conference match with Avila University and a non-conference match with Hannibal-LaGrange University. MVC cruised against Avila winning 28-26, 25-19, 25-14, and defeated Hannibal-LaGrange University 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16.
In the first match of the day against Avila, the Vikings dominated through most of the match winning 3-0. MVC held a 23-18 lead at, but Avila was able to rally, but MVC held on to win game one by a 28-26 score. Again in game two, the Vikings got to the 23-point total when Avila put together a rally, but MVC won by a 25-19 margin. Game three was all MVC as the Vikings cruised to a 25-14 victory for the sweep. MVC was led by Senior Outside Hitter Ana Calito (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) who finished with a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior Middle Blocker Taylor Trotter (Bartonville, Ill.) added eight kills, while Senior Libero Diane Dellasalla (Houston, Texas) had 10 digs. Also, Senior Setter Tarrah Sweet (Roswell, N.M.) finished with 34 assists, eight kills and five digs, while Senior Middle Blocker Jada Holinshead (Tunnel Hill, Ill.) had seven kills, three blocks, and a 64-percent hitting percentage.
In the second match of the Triangular the Vikings found themselves in an early hole, losing just their second game of the season, but bounced back to win the next three games to win 3-1. Leading the way for MVC was Calito who finished with a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs. Also in double-figures with kills were Holinshead with 13 kills and Freshman Outside Hitter Lauren Eldridge (Kansas City, Mo.) with 10 kills. Sweet finished with 46 assists, 10 digs, and four kills, and the team finished with 10 total blocks.
The pair of wins give MVC a 10-0 record on the season. The Vikings have won 20-straight regular season matches, dating back to the end of the 2012 regular season.
Up next for the Vikings is a road conference match with Baker University Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Baldwin City, Kan. Baker is in the "others receiving votes" category of the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
