VIKING MEN'S SOCCER TEAM BEATS JAMESTOWN SATURDAY

Marshall, Mo. (September 14, 2013)- The No. 17 Missouri Valley College men's soccer team welcomed the University of Jamestown (N.D.) to Gregg-Mitchell Field Saturday afternoon.  Two first half goals helped the Vikings to a 3-1 win.

Things got off to a good start for MVC as they quickly found the back of the net in the first half.  Junior Forward Tiago Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) set up Senior Forward Alberto Linan Gomez (Seville, Spain) for the game's first goal, less than seven minutes into the game.  Just six minutes later the Vikings scored again, this time when Senior Forward Nicholas Alexander (Manchester, England) hooked up with Junior Midfielder Albaro Diaz Hidalgo (Seville, Spain) to make it a 2-0 MVC lead.  The Vikings pounded Jamestown with nine total shots in the first half, but the game would go into the halftime break at 2-0.  The Vikings quickly added to the lead after the second half restart when Gomez and Ferreira teamed up again less than four minutes into the half.  This time Gomez got the assist and Ferreira the goal.  Jamestown tried to mount a comeback late in the second half, getting one past Senior Keeper Josh Wells (Kent, England) at the 66-minute mark, but MVC held on for the 3-1 victory.

The Vikings outshot Jamestown 17-5, and Wells made three saves in the game.  Both Ferreira and Gomez scored their second goals of the season, while Alexander tallied his second assist.  Jamestown came into the match in the "others receiving votes" category of the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

The win improves MVC to 4-1 on the season while Jamestown drops to 4-3-1.

Up next for the Vikings is a matchup with William Woods University at Gregg-Mitchell Field Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
