Krista Newman has been hired as the new head volleyball coach at William Jewell College, according to Athletic Director Dr. Darlene Bailey. Newman comes to Jewell from Avila University, where she led the Eagles to an overall record of 37-50 in three years at the helm. Newman helped led the team to 16 and 18 wins respectively in the last two seasons.
"We are pleased to welcome Krista to our staff as head volleyball coach" said Bailey. "Krista brings an enthusiastic approach and a proven track record of success from Avila and we look forward to our volleyball team reaching new heights under Krista’s leadership.”
Newman led Avila to one of its best seasons in program history in 2012, with a win-loss record of 18-14 which was Avila’s first winning season since 1996.
"I want to thank Dr. Bailey, and William Jewell for giving me the honor and privilege of becoming the next head volleyball coach at William Jewell College", said Newman.
Newman graduated from Northwest Missouri State University, where she earned a bachelor of arts in sociology with a minor in coaching. As a player at NWMSU, she led the team in kills and kills-per-game percentage, and she set a school record for most kills in a game (31). Additionally, Newman was named to the 2002 All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association team for volleyball. Prior to arriving at Avila, Newman had more than eight years of coaching experience. She was the head volleyball coach at Chicago State University, an NCAA Division I program, and also served as an assistant coach at Longview Community College. Most recently, she was the head coach of the KC Power Volleyball Club, where her teams finished fifth at the 2009 United States of America Volleyball (USAV) National Junior Volleyball Championships and in the top five in two USAV national qualifiers.
