MVC MEN'S SOCCER TEAM OPENS SEASON WITH WIN

Marshall, Mo. (August 25, 2013)- The No. 18 Missouri Valley College men's soccer team opened its 2013 season with a 2-1 victory over Wayland Baptist University Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, Kan.  Wayland Baptist is currently in the "others receiving votes" category in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll.

The Vikings scored the first goal of their season 30-minutes into the match when Senior Midfielder Carlos Berastain (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) found the back of the net off an assist by Junior Defender Bernardo Diaz (Cadiz, Spain).

Saves made by Senior Goalkeeper Josh Wells (Kent, England) help give the Vikings a 1-0 halftime lead.

Wayland Baptist was able to tie the game up midway through the second half, but the Vikings were able to put the pressure on late in the second half and broke through with the game winning goal.

Senior Forward Nicholas Alexander (Manchester, England) connected on a shot from 25-yards out that hit the bottom of the cross bar and scored with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Vikings were able to keep Wayland Baptist from tying the score, and held on for a 2-1 victory.

The Vikings improve to 1-0 on the season while Wayland Baptist drops to 0-1-1.

Up next for MVC they host Quincy University in an exhibition game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Gregg-Mitchell Field.
