MVC MEN'S SOCCER TEAM GETS HOME SHUTOUT AGAINST WILLIAM WOODS
Marshall, Mo. (September 18, 2013)- The Missouri Valley College men's soccer team used three first half goals to defeat William Woods University in a home match Wednesday evening 4-0.
The Vikings got their scoring started after just 12-minutes of action in the first half when Tiago Ferreira was set up with a through-ball to give MVC the 1-0 lead. Senior Forward Alberto Linan Gomez (Seville, Spain) and Junior Midfielder Alvaro Diaz Hidalgo (Seville, Spain) were credited with assists in Ferreira's goal. The second goal came at the 30-minute mark when Senior Forward Nicholas Alexander (Manchester, England) scored off an assist by Sophomore Midfielder Carlos Berastain Munar (Palma de Mallorca, Brazil) giving MVC the 2-0 lead. The Vikings continued to pressure William Woods late in the first half, and found the goal once again just before halftime. With less than two minutes left in the half the ball found Senior Defender Bruno Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in a crowded penalty box, and Campos scored to give MVC a 3-0 lead at the break.
In the second half the Vikings added one more goal to extend their lead to 4-0 when Alexander scored his second of the game off an assist from Junior Midfielder Ivan Ninkov (Pancevo, Serbia). Senior Keeper Josh Wells (Kent, England) was credited with the shutout, his third of the season. Wells made four saves in the game. The Vikings as a team had a total of 21 shots, 11 of which were on goal. William Woods was able to get off 14 shots, six of which made it on goal.
Alexander now has three goals on the season and eight total points. Also, Ferreira increases his goal total to three and has eight points on the season. After the shutout Wells drops his goals per game allowed average to 0.67.
The Vikings improve to 5-1 with the win, while William Woods falls to 3-3.
Up next for the Vikings is a matchup with Dakota Wesleyan University on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Gregg-Mitchell Field.
